MTH 4230 – History of Mathematics

The major portion of this course will explore the evolution of Mathematical ideas in the ancient period (approximately 2000 B.C. to 1200 A.D.), and conclude with a study of the re-emergence of Mathematics in Europe between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. In the ancient period Mathematical contributions of Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, Indian and Arab Mathematicians will be studied. Then re-emergence of Mathematics in Europe will be explored through the contributions of Leonardo Pisa (Fibonacci), Luca Pacioli, Gerolamo Cardano, and Francois Vieta.

Prequisites: MTH 3006 or MTH 3010 or department permission.
